DRAGONFLY MOON -
Supporting World Fair-Trade and British Craftspeople
OUR INSTRUMENTS ARE
FAIRLY-TRADED WHEREVER
POSSIBLE

Ethically
Traded World Musical Instruments At Excellent Prices
starting at £1.50 - ALL available to mail order!
ALL our instruments are
fairly traded wherever possible, as we endeavour to supply quality, ethical
products at fair prices,
supporting not only world-wide fair trade but also British instrument-makers.
Not only do we consider fair-trade to be an important issue, but we also do
our best to ensure that instrument materials are sustainably sourced -
hence we aim to avoid the use of non-sustainable hardwoods and, of course, all
natural animal-derived materials are strictly bi-products.
Our ethics are important to us, as fair trade should mean fair to the
environment as well as to our producers and customers.
If you have any questions regarding our ethical policies please do not hesitate
to Contact Us.

DRUMS
Our drums are all high quality,
individually hand-made and ethically traded instruments used primarily for
music, dance and self-expression, but which can also be utilized for 'healing',
'space-clearing', shamanic work and for bringing people together to
celebrate life and living in the
moment.
We primarily trade in DJEMBES
of varying sizes, designs and prices
from Ghana,
Bali & the Ivory Coast but also stock drums
from other varied locations around the world including beautiful ocean drums from
Nepal & Bali,
bodhrans from both Pakistan & Ireland, darbukas from Turkey &
Egypt, talking drums from Ghana & Bali, double-skinned frame drums from
Mexico, single-skinned frame drums & tambours from Bali and Remo buffalo drums from the USA.
DJEMBES...
The djembe is the most
popular West African drum and is now played all over the world as it can produce
an amazing array of sounds created by its shape, skin, wood & tuning.
Traditionally it is made with a wooden shell and a goat skin playing area,
attached with knotted cord to create the tension of the skin.
It is played raised off the floor to allow the sound to emerge fully, with both hands, fingers together, hitting the skin of the drum and
bouncing off it to create the notes. The main notes (played with either or
both hands) are the BASS note played in the centre of the drumhead with the
whole hand to create a
beautifully deep & resonant sound; the TONE note played on the rim with the
fingers which creates a higher sound; and the loud, SLAP note which is played by
pivoting the hand onto the side of the drum and 'slapping' slightly splayed fingers onto the
rim.
Best
quality sustainable wooden djembes - hand-made, traditional African drums:
We
primarily stock
fabulous, traditional Ghanaian drums made from Africa Cedar
Wood (a
softwood and hence not contributing to the deforestation of exotic hardwoods) and goat
skin.
They are hand carved from one piece of wood from start to finish and are decorated with traditional carved
designs (designs variable). These djembes have
a fantastic traditional sound, are well tensioned
and come highly recommended.
They come in
four sizes: approx 70cm high with approx 13 head at £149.00; approx 55-60cm high
with
approx 11 head at £115.00;
approx 50cm high with approx 9" head at £70.00; and approx 40cm high
with
approx 7" head at £49.00. Sizes are approximate as they are all hand made
and therefore vary slightly,
meaning also that each drum is unique! The quality is
always excellent and we have been using them personally for a number of years,
so they come highly recommended!
Double roped versions, also from Ghana, are also available to order:
(50cm high with 9" head at £119.00; 55-60cm high with 11" head at £149.00 and 70cm high with 13" head at £179.00).

in particular are
important shamanic tools which are much used in varying traditions for space clearing,
'healing'
and energy work as they carry the potential of changing and re-directing
'energy' flows & clearing 'blockages' very quickly when used with clear, focused
intention.
Our

OTHER
INSTRUMENTS
TIBETAN SINGING BOWLS,
BELLS &
CYMBALS:
Singing Bowls are played by holding
the bowl in the palm of one hand and the wooden beater in the other. With
a fairly firm yet even pressure rub the wooden beater (using about half-way up
it) clockwise around the outside edge of the rim of the bowl. As you
rotate the beater around the outside rim of the bowl, maintaining an even
pressure and speed, the friction created will make the bowl start to vibrate and
'sing'. Keep playing smoothly, allowing the sound of the singing bowl to
build up slowly as the vibration increases.
