Shamanism & Ancient British Traditions:

We all have our roots in shamanism.
A shaman is one who knows; an inspired one; a walker between the worlds.
Shamanism is a spiritual pathway to knowledge based upon experience.

Shamanic cultures have existed since early times in many areas of the world, including, in my opinion, our own native Britain.
The term itself originally comes from Siberia and only became widespread in the 19th century by Russian anthropologists studying indigenous tribal cultures, so it is not surprising that this term has not been widely used in Britain,
even though it has been generally 'adopted' by many peoples around the world.

Yet Britain does have its own rich and accessible
native spiritual tradition which can touch us deeply with its mystery and connect us strongly to the spirit of this magical land if we open ourselves to its potential.
This tradition, both Celtic & Pre-Celtic, is firmly rooted in shamanism and can be both empowering and life-enriching.

The shamanic heart of our culture has long been overshadowed but it still remains, alive and vibrant, clothed in the land and its stories.  One only has to seek it with a sincere heart to gain a glimpse into these ancient mysteries.  Traces are evident in surviving myths, customs and folklore as well as artwork & iconography, archaeology & sacred sites and, of course, the land itself, which can be understood to carry our ancestral memories, having much to teach us if we can only learn to connect with it on a deeper level.

It is still very much a living tradition and its mysteries are alive and well, meaning one must make an effort to find it - following the clues and secrets locked within the myths and hidden in the landscape and working with them in a variety of ways and on many levels in order to access their wisdom and bring it into the physical, tangible realm where it may enhance our lives and help us to gain true understanding of our own place within this ancient land.

NB: 'Shamanistic' traditions and techniques can be learned and harnessed by anyone with a desire and willingness to put the time and effort in.  However, merely learning and harnessing such personal empowerment techniques, while potentially enhancing your own life, will not make you a 'shaman' or qualify you to work with others in such a manner (this requires far more hard work & commitment than simply attending a few workshops or undertaking a few 'journeys'!  Furthermore it can be regarded as disrespectful to indigenous peoples worldwide to refer to ones-self as such).  Rather, these traditions and experiential techniques may simply show you a doorway to further possibilities for yourself which you may choose to pursue more deeply over time, arriving at your own understanding of the mysteries of our ancestors and our lands.

DRUM 2.jpg (261347 bytes)I am often asked about the most important attributes of any good shamanic or spiritual practice -
well, for me they are:

HONESTY * INTEGRITY * RESPONSIBILITY * RESPECT * DISCERNMENT * INTENTION * BALANCE
